1989

As quickly as they had appeared the year before, the Monroe Woodbury men vanished, and 1989 was a return to normalcy for the Alumni Run. Todd Sinclair won his second individual title, as did Nanuet's Rita Keahon for the women (becoming the first woman under 19:00 in the process). The Albertus men resumed their customary position in the winner's circle. Even participation numbers fell back into line with previous years. The more one examines the results, however, the more apparent it is that 1989 is an abberation, while 1988 a portent of bigger things to come.

The most significant thing about 1989, in terms of the overall history of the Alumni Race, is that it marks the graduation year of both Tappan Zee's Art Gunther and Clarkstown South's Paul Sklar. While neither impacted this year's race--Gunther placed 17th, Sklar 21st--the two would go on to win seven of 11 races from 1991 to 2001.
