1984

This year, to me, marks the beginning of the alumni race's modern era. Nearly 150 crazies toed the line for the second annual race, firmly establishing it on the Rockland County race calendar. Eight schools fielded full teams, and Pearl River put together the first full women's team, sweeping the men's and women's titles (a feat they would duplicate eight years later). The Pirate men, in fact, run a combined time of 78:40 for five runners, still the second-fastest total in race history; that stat, combined with their 2-5-7-13-16 finish, ranks them as the third best alumni team ever.

More runners meant better competition. Ten athletes dipped under Pat Chambers' winning time from the previous year. Chambers himself ran 17:29, a time which would have placed him sixth in 1983 but landed him in 25th this year. Goshen's Brian Nierstedt forever established the presence of non-Rockland schools in the race by winning the title, but since then only two athletes from outside the regular Alumni Race field (in which I include Monroe Woodbury, which might as well be in Rockland) have captured the men's title. Aileen O'Shea repeated for the women, beating out a field of 14, including Nanuet's Rita Keahon, an alumni race legend in the making.
