2010

For the second straight year, a clear, chilly, windy day greeted runners at the start; and for the second straight year, a high-scoring, tight battle in the men's team race. With eight teams represented among the top 10, high scores were sure to follow. The 2009 race saw records for the highest winning score (81 points) and the smallest victory margin (1 point, at 81-82)...and both those results nearly repeated themselves, with Pearl River narrowly edging the repeat bid of Monroe Woodbury, 80-82. Through the first four runners Tappan Zee actually had a 43-44-54 edge on the top two, but the Pirates were able to catch the Dutchmen and hold off the Crusaders in a tight battle.

Monroe Woodbury had no such concerns on the women's side, taking five of the top nine spots en route to the most lopsided victory in Alumni Race history. This despite "only" an eighth-place showing from eight-time women's champ Julianne Littman-Viscardo, who ran the race solidly into her second trimester. Future aspirants to the women's title have a clear blueprint for defeating Julianne: ensure that she is pregnant in November. This will at least give you a fighting chance.

Outstanding runs from the less-experienced members of my household: Thing #1 put up a good fight in the 5-6 race, despite having just turned five one week prior; Thing #2 dominated the toddlers' race; and my better half ran her first Alumni Race, sporting the red and gray of Upper Dublin (PA) High. Go Cardinals!

2010: Jamie's writeup is here!

Below is Jamie's writeup of the 2010 race. Full results follow his report. I'll post my recap ASAP.

Terry, Pollack Blaze Trail at Rockland Alumni Cross Country Run
Pearl River, Monroe-Woodbury claim team titles at 28th Markiewicz event

Matt Terry of Danbury, Conn., and former Tappan Zee standout Jacqueline Pollack were crowned men’s and women’s champions at the 28th annual Bill Markiewicz Memorial Rockland Alumni Cross Country Run, held Nov. 27 at Bear Mountain.

Terry, a junior at Providence College, fought off a stern challenge from ex-North Rockland star Carlos Jamieson to capture the individual championship in 15 minutes 45 seconds over the hilly 3-mile Bear Mountain layout. Jamieson, a 2005 North Rockland alumnus who won the Rockland County schoolboy title in 2003, finished a scant second behind in 15:46.

Terry was Providence’s fifth scorer in the recent NCAA Division I championships, helping the Friars to a 22nd-place team finish.

Pollack, a 2010 Tappan Zee graduate, scored a convincing wire-to-wire victory in 20:09. She was the 2009 Section 1 Class A champion as a Dutchie senior. Runner-up Suzanne LaBurt, Monroe-Woodbury class of 1981, finished 120 yards back in 20:38. LaBurt has placed second four times and finished in the top five every year since 2002.

In the men’s team competition, Pearl River edged Monroe-Woodbury, 80 to 82, for its third title overall and first since 1992. On the women’s side, Monroe-Woodbury placed five runners in the top nine to decisively beat runner-up Suffern, 32 to 106. The championship was the seventh for the Crusaders from Orange County, snapping a tie with Pearl River for most women’s team titles.

The race, co-sponsored by the Rockland Road Runners, drew 255 participants including 74 women, tied for the second-highest total in meet history. Overall, 59 schools from nine states were represented – including California, North Dakota, Minnesota and Michigan – as well as international entrants from France and Turkey.

The oldest finisher was Joe D’Innocenzo, 73, from the Tappan Zee class of 1955, who placed 215th in 31:31. D’Innocenzo was the No. 2 man on Rockland’s first state championship cross country team, the 1954 Tappan Zee squad, and also coached the Clarkstown/Clarkstown North track team for 20 years.

The race is named in honor of Bill Markiewicz, a 1967 Albertus Magnus graduate who spent 11 successful years (1978-89) as Clarkstown North’s head cross country and assistant track coach, and was one of Rockland cross country’s biggest boosters. When he died of cancer in March 1991, the race was renamed in his memory and an annual award was established to recognize those who have rendered distinguished service to the sport.

This year’s winner is Janie Howell of Suffern, who has tabulated and transmitted to the media computerized results for virtually every Rockland-affiliated meet for more than a decade.

Howell’s daughter Meghan, Suffern class of 1999, was one of 10 former Rockland County meet champions who participated in this year’s Alumni Run. She was a three-time County champ (1996-98). She was joined by fellow ex-Mountie Shelby Greany, class of 2009 and now a Providence sophomore, who was a five-time County champion (2004-08) and is fresh off her 12th-place showing at the recent NCAA championships, the highest finish ever by a Rocklander.

Others included a pair of three-time champions from Pearl River, Brendan Fennell, class of 2003 (2000-02) and Mike Hickey, class of 2009 (2006-08); two-time winner Erin Haugh Colleran, Nanuet class of 1997 (1994-95); two former Albertus Magnus standouts, Mike Colangelo, class of 1975 (1974), and Laurel Gilhooly Reilly, class of 1981 (1980); Mike Rogan, Clarkstown North class of 1986 (1985); Pete Modafferi, Clarkstown South class of 1995 (1994); and Jamieson.

Rockland All-Century Team (1900-1999) members who competed in the race included Colangelo, Haugh Colleran, Howell, Pat Chambers, Albertus Magnus class of 1976, Eileen Shiel Herman, Clarkstown South class of 1981, and Andy Kohlbrenner, Pearl River class of 1981. Rockland All-Decade Team (2000-2009) members who took part included Fennell and Greany, who were voted Runners of the Decade, Jamieson, Hickey and Miguel Reyes, North Rockland class of 2003.

Seven previous Alumni Run champions also competed: eight-time titleholder Julianne Littmann-Viscardo, Monroe-Woodbury class of 1995 (1998, 2001, 2003-07, 2009); Chambers, the inaugural winner in 1983; three-time champ John Trautmann, Monroe-Woodbury class of 1986 (1988, 1994-95), the course record-holder at 14:08; George Buckheit, Albertus Magnus class of 1975 (1985, 1987); Brian Crowley, Albertus Magnus class of 1982 (1990); Nick Roosa, Tappan Zee class of 2003 (2005); and Brian McKnight, Monroe-Woodbury class of 1997 (2000).

Two former Albertus Magnus harriers kept alive their streak of never having missed an Alumni Run: Chambers and Larry Beckerle, class of 1973, who coached the 1990 Nanuet girls’ team to the state Class C title.

2009

The individual storylines dominated the 2009 race--and we'll get to them in a second--but for me, this will forever be the one that got away. With the window closing on our opportunity to break the deadlock with Albertus Magnus, tied for men's team titles with eight apiece, my Rams knew this might be one of our last chances to claim the record for ourselves. Not that we were ready to do so--as the years pass, injuries and attrition continue to take their toll, and even our youngest scorer has been out of school for over ten years now--but the team race looked pretty wide open, and we thought we might have a chance.

It did indeed play out that way, as the top ten to twenty runners were scattered among several teams, with noone putting together a tight pack. The scoring was up in the air for several hours, and we went home not knowing whether or not we had picked up that elusive ninth victory. The, late in the afternoon, the call came. Yes! We had done it. On the strength of a sixth-man tiebreaker, we had the win.

It took several weeks for the mistake to be corrected--Jamie's write-up even reported the Rams' big win--but an unofficial runner in 28th place wound up affecting the scoring, moving Jim Trautmann up from 29th and giving the Crusaders their second team title, by a single point. God, I'm getting sick just thinking about it. The closest race in history also produced the highest winning scores on both the mens' and womens' side, as Albertus took their first womens' title with 92 points as the only complete scoring team.

Julianne Littmann-Viscardo took her eighth victory, extending several of her own records; Nyack's Bert Rodriguez came through after several close calls in recent years to win the Indians' first individual title, male or female. But the biggest news on the individual side was the loss of one of the Big Three. Walt Johnston (Suffern '65), who had previously run all 26 Alumni Races, skipped the '09 event, leaving only two of the originals left: Albertus' Larry Beckerle and Pat Chambers.

2008

What can I say about the 26th Alumni Run? From an historical standpoint, the biggest story has to be the sixth overall team title for the Monroe-Woodbury women, equaling Pearl River's women's team record. Beyond that, juicy storylines were tough to come by. Few records were set. The Suffern men won their first team title in over a decade, and their fourth overall. The men's and women's individual races both saw first-time champions. Yours truly and the rest of the North men knew we had no chance, with the majority of our team either injured or coming off injuries; our second-place finish was a stroke of good fortune. Getting older stinks.

There were plenty of cool individual stories, which Jamie covered nicely in his race write-up (link to come). Also, Jamie reports that there was a professional videographer at the race, who has put together a nice 45-minute video of race footage and interviews. It really captures what the race experience is about. If you are interested in purchasing a copy (they are around $20 I think), contact Jamie and he will get you some more info.

2007

Can you believe it's been 25 years? I can't. Easy for me to say, though; I've only been eligible for the last fifteen. And yeah, they have flown by. The silver anniversary edition was indeed something special. Cold temperatures did not deter the 283 finishers--second-highest total in race history.

The North men came in looking to make history. A win this year would have vaulted us past Albertus into the top spot of the most hallowed category of them all--all-time men's team victories. The record once thought unassailable was about to be broken! We put our record six-year winning streak on the line and set off to rewrite the record books.

The opening pace felt suicidally fast, or maybe I'm just getting old. I certainly couldn't keep track of the various teams splayed out in front of me. The legendary Art Gunther led the charge from Tappan Zee, as we had known he would. North Rockland appeared to have several runners stacked up front. There were a few Monroe Woodbury contenders, and I recognized Albertus' Brian Crowley running his customarily strong race. And then there were several runners in red whom none of us could identify.

By the finish, though, these new challengers revealed a painful truth--we had lost. Somers High School, which had never before put a full scoring five together, became the first Westchester school to win the Alumni race, putting four collegians and five runners in the top 21. We had to content ourselves with being the first Rockland team and a record-setting 14th top-3 finish--cold comfort on this frigid day.

Ours was not the only streak to fall at the hands of the youngsters. Jamie Kempton's amazing run of 19 consecutive top-10 finishes came to an end, though he did record his record 24th top-30.

Art Gunther, as usual, was not to be denied; he turned away a strong challenge from Nyack's Bert Rodriguez to take his record seventh men's title and lay claim to the #1 all-time ranking. Monroe Woodbury's Julianne Littmann-Viscardo displayed her usual dominance, breaking her own records with her fifth consecutive and seventh overall women's title. Her 69-second win propelled the Lady Crusaders to their fifth team title, second all-time to Pearl River's six.

In other news, my daughter Lexi, after celebrating her second birthday the week before, made her eagerly anticipated debut in the toddler race. Her DFL finish makes me wonder if maybe she was adopted. She has blue eyes, too. Hmmm.

2006

History galore was made during the 2006 race. Julianne Littmann, the greatest runner in Alumni women's history, broke Art Gunther's all-gender record with her fourth consecutive win. Tim Cox became Suffern's first individual winner, male or female. The Clarkstown North men extended their record streak of consecutive wins to six, in the process setting a record for wins in an eight-year span (seven), and equaling Albertus Magnus' all-time record of eight team titles. The North women followed suit, giving the Rams the team sweep for the second time in five years, becoming the fourth pair ever to do it (following Pearl River in '84 and '92, and North in '02).

Results are quite abbreviated. Jamie once again provides the story:

"Last Saturday evening around 6:15 p.m., the cards and timing tape were scattered across Route 303 in Blauvelt and blowing all over the place. I spent an hour dodging cars trying to retrieve as many as possible. Myself and George Hoy picked up 183 cards that night. The next morning, I went back and managed to pick up 18 more, which were soggy from the night frost and morning dew. That left about 15 cards unaccounted for.

"The problem is, only the first 67 cards had place numbers on them. I found the soggy Chronomix tape Sunday morning, so we have all the times, but places #68 through 216 are unknown. Mike Collins suggested my sending a mass e-mail requesting people to provide us their finishing places, but fewer than 1/3 of the entrants gave us an e-mail address. And trusting people's memory for their exact place is chancy.

"Someone suggested hiring a results guy to do the scoring next year, but A) where would the money come from? and B) That would depart from the spirit of the event as we have maintained it.

"Not sure this year's results snafu will be easily solved."

Ah, nuts. Anyway, if you do know your place and time, e-mail me and I'll update as best as possible. In the meantime, I can update most of the records; the main problems are going to be with the participation totals, and determining whose streaks are still intact. If you have a solution, let me know.

Each year, the Alumni Run course undergoes minor changes and alterations, mostly designed to protect the athletes while ensuring that the race retains as much of its historical cachet as possible. Most of these changes are cosmetic and do little to alter the course or the results--moving the starting line forward to accommodate the merry-go-round, for example, or avoiding the parking lot so that runners do not have to dodge oncoming traffic in the final half-mile. Though the course is invariably different from the one most of us ran in high school, the times remained relatively consistent throughout the years, and the changes seemed to have little effect.

For the second straight year, however, 2005 witnessed a more drastic course alteration that certainly contributed to an overall slowing of race times. In 2004 the downhill portion of the ski jump was modified to eliminate the infamous "vertical drop" that took runners down into the parking lot next to the ice rink. The resulting downhill backtracked across the face of the slope, emerging on the near side of the rink; it relaxed the grade of the descent but invariably lengthened it, and slowed times further due to the technical nature of this section. Tappan Zee coach Steve Sutton compared times for high school races before and after the change and concluded that the new course was between ten and fifteen seconds slower; a brief look at the 2004 Alumni Run results seems to confirm this estimate.

This year's race not only retained the "new" downhill, but also added a short detour around a construction site near the Inn at the start of the third mile. Also, the finish line seemed to be even further back than in previous years. I have not yet had a chance to wheel the course, but Jamie and I estimate that the course may be as much as 25 to 30 seconds slower than the "classic" course that most of us are used to. Combine these changes with the cold, icy conditions, and there is no surprise that the 2005 race goes down as the slowest in Alumni Run history. It is almost unfair to compare times from the past two years to those beforehand, as these results don't do justice to the quality of the performances turned in. But there you go.

The biggest story this year, other than the fun addition of some kids' races prior to the start, was the third straight victory for Julianne Littmann in the women's race, surpassing Rita Keahon's total of four victories in women's competition. Only Gunther has won more races in Alumni history than Littmann's five.

2004

One of the great success stories on the Rockland running scene in the past few years has been the ascendance of the Tappan Zee boys cross-country team as one of the powerhouses in the state. Under the guidance of 1990 grad Steve Sutton, the Dutchmen won the state class B championship in 2003 and followed it with their first county title in 2004. With their recent successes providing an infusion of youth, and the return of Art Gunther after a two-year hiatus, Tappan Zee came into this year's race with aspirations of their first-ever Alumni victory.

The North men had aspirations of our own; a win in the 2004 edition would be our fourth straight, breaking the record we shared with Albertus and Suffern. Early-season hopes were high for a "four-peat," but injuries to Pat Driscoll and Matt Strasberg left our roster thin. Sizing up the competition at the start, we knew we had a battle on our hands.

The top runners sorted themselves out quickly, and by the mile mark three teams--North, TZ, and Suffern--each had three runners in the top twelve. At that point the Mounties, running 2-3-4, seemed to have a clear advantage, but behind the frontrunners the Rams displayed solid pack running to move into position. When the dust settled, North escaped with a five-point victory over Tappan Zee--the closest margin in race history. (For those who care, it's probably the best three-team finish in Alumni history, but for two-team drama, you still can't beat 2000, when North and South accounted for nine of the top 15 by themselves.)

In the decade since the Pearl River women had last won a team title, they had seen Nanuet equal their record of fifth victories; but this year saw the Lady Pirates return to the victor's circle. Their 15-point victory over Monroe Woodbury was their sixth overall, surpassing the record they had shared with the Golden Knights.

On the individual side, Art Gunther won an astounding sixth title in dominant fashion; Julianne Littmann was no less impressive in winning her record-tying fourth race in seven years by nearly a minute.

2003

In the spring of this year, as word started to spread about the website, I got an e-mail from Andrew Rikert (Guilderland '97) who was starting a Section II alumni race similar to the Alumni Run in Guilderland, NY in September. He did alot of work and put together a nice debut run, getting over 60 finishers at the inaugural event. Lo and behold, who shows up two months later at the Bear but Andrew himself, dragging three of his former teammates in tow. In a coming-out party for what we hope will be a competitive team in future years, Guilderland's small but strong contingent put up a solid showing, with three top-30 finishes among them, including race winner James Sweeney. A hearty welcome to the Long Red Line.

(Ed. note: In recent years, Jim has become a friend and training partner of mine, and one of the top ultramarathoners in the country, with top-3 finishes at the JFK 50 mile and Vermont 100 mile to his name.)

While James became only the third runner from a "non-regular" school to win the men's title, the men's team title was contested among a group of familiar faces. Despite a strong non-Rockland presence in the top 10--non-area schools took 5 of the first 9 spots--the top teams packed in their athletes in the next twenty, and the race for team honors was on. For the third straight year the boys in purple and gold won out, boosted by a strong showing from Anthony Calingo, coming off a 2:40 effort just two weeks earlier in Richmond as part of the USMA marathon team. Despite what seemed to be favorable conditions, the men's race was one of the slowest on record, with only four runners breaking 16 minutes; the winning time was second-slowest in race history.

On the women's side, Julianne Littman returned to the Alumni Race after a one-year hiatus and reclaimed the throne she abdicated a year earlier. Her 18:27 was the slowest of her three victories to this point, but it helps support her claim as one of the greatest women in race history. The Newsome sisters made the team race a family affair, claiming three of the top 13 spots in leading the Clarkstown South women to their third win in the second-closest women's race ever. Kim Newsome tied an Alumni record with her tenth top-10 finish, equaling the women's standard set by Laura Pederson-Higgins.

2002

My tenth consecutive Alumni Run was also the 20th anniversary of the event, and race organizers planned to celebrate in style, moving the post-race party from its traditional home above the Bear Mountain Inn to the more upscale catering hall Nicole's in Highland Falls. (Why hold the Rockland County Alumni Race party outside Rockland County? Who knows.) On tap--other than the open bar--a highlight video commemorating the first 20 years of this ridiculously sublime event. But before everyone could go get a nice Saturday-afternoon buzz, there was racing to be done.

Among a field of 260 runners--then the fourth-highest total in race history--our North men toed the line vying for our second straight title. Coming off his 2:32 effort in Chicago one month earlier, Tom McCarney ran a PR to spearhead our effort, and we got unexpected performances from Taroon Amin and Tom Dillon to round out our scoring. The 71 points tied our own record for highest score by a winning team, but it was enough for our third victory in four years, and fifth straight top-two finish.

Even more surprising was the performance of the North women. After having never finished in the top three in the first 19 years of the race, the Lady Rams (what does that make them? Ewes?) scored their first ever Alumni win. For only the third time in race history, one school swept the men's and women's titles; for only the second time ever, that team also took the participation title (Pearl River in 1992 and 1984 were the other "sweepers").

2001

While I will always remember the 2001 race for personal reasons--see the next paragraph for details on the men's team race--there were aspects of the 19th edition that were much more significant historically. Julianne Littman recorded the second-fastest women's time ever in scoring her second Alumni Race victory; more impressive, it marked her record seventh straight top-10 finish (and sixth straight top-3). In the first seven races for which she was eligible, she did not finish lower than fourth. Her impressive display led the Lady Crusaders to their record-breaking third straight team title. Tappan Zee legend Art Gunther also turned in a record-setting performance; his fifth title broke Rita Keahon's all-gender record of four Alumni victories.

As for the men's team race: the sting of the previous year's loss did not wear off quickly, and the fact that we had been involved in the best two-team race in Alumni history did little to soften the blow. Suffice it to say we approached the 2001 race with a score to settle with our Southern rivals. The racing was tight up front, but for once it was actually our team with the superior depth, and we had our second win in three years, and North's third overall.

2000

After two years of wide-open racing, producing the two highest winning scores in race history, the Alumni Run underwent another transformation this year. Yes, North and South had basically raced each other in 1998 and '99, but neither team had been able to fill the dynastic void left by the Suffern men of 1995-97, a stretch that included the sixth- and seventh-best Alumni teams ever. Suddenly, in 2000, both teams decided that they wanted to wear the crown of the Next Great Dynasty. What followed was the best two-team race in Alumni history.

I have to admit: I thought we had it. As the defending champs, I thought we had an advantage; I knew we were all coming back in better shape than we had been the year before. Even after I pulled a hamstring in September I knew we'd get around it. My training came back to form and I figured we had no problems.

During the race, however, we seemed to run as if not to lose rather than to win. All five of us ran a little bit more conservative than we should have, and we all counted spots. When Tom and I crossed the line, we were fairly certain that we were ahead of South's fourth man. My teammates up front agreed; they also counted three South runners in front of us. Unfortunately, we were each counting different people. Our young guns up front didn't recognize South's Paul Sklar (class of '89), who came home second overall, and Tom and I didn't know Brendan Sullivan (class of '97), who was third.

After we realized that South had gone not 2-4-10 or 3-4-10 but 2-3-4-10, it was pretty obvious that we were sunk. Despite placing five in the top 15 and having a cumulative time of 79:30 for our five runners--the sixth-fastest total in race history--we lost out to what I consider the second-best team in Alumni history. (I rate our 2000 squad eighth overall, the only non-champion in my top 10.) The 16-point margin of victory was, at the time, the third-closest in race history.

On the women's side, Monroe Woodbury took their second straight team title, as Julianne Littmann continued to build a resume as the top woman in Alumni history.

Another year of wide-open racing, and, for the second straight year, a new record for the most points scored by the winning team. This year the North men came out on top, finally realizing the promise of the past three years of racing. Monroe Woodbury won the first of what would be a record three straight women's titles.

1998

The Suffern men's three-year stranglehold on the field came to an abrupt end in 1998. With the college graduations of Brian Rubin in 1997 and Jim Gerhart and Frank Gagliano in the spring of '98, the core of the Mounties' dominance suddenly found themselves faced with the real world, where training hours were a bit more difficult to come by. The field was thrown wide open, making for some entertaining racing. The result: Clarkstown South's first title with 70 points, a new record for the most points scored by an alumni race champ. Parity ruled the day.

Not so for the individual racing, however. Art Gunther proved his near-invincibility with his third straight crown and fourth overall, breaking John Trautmann's record for most titles by a male runner and tying Rita Keahon of Nanuet for the most individual wins, period. Julianne Littmann was able to break through after several years of top-notch racing to claim her first title for the women.

As for the heroes of the Purple and Gold: the class of '98 brought us two fresh faces from the Rams' 1997 Section I champions, and yes, we did think it was our year. Without Tom McCarney, though, who sat out the race with a stomach flu after having been our number one runner the previous two years, we were forced to settle for the runner-up spot. We would have to wait another year for that elusive victory.

In an interesting twist, for the first time in the 16-year history of the Alumni Run, there was a tie. Suffern and Monroe Woodbury each scored 120 points to tie for third in the men's race. The race was decided by the sixth man for each squad; the two happened to be a mere four seconds apart. Duke star Matt Diglio (MW '96) ran 17:54 for 42nd place, while Suffern's Mike Antonelli ('98) ran 17:58 to place 45th, giving Monroe Woodbury their fourth consecutive top-3 finish.

1997

The year I graduated from college, my fifth Alumni Run, another small step forward for North as we hang on to fourth despite the absence of Mike Morris. The biggest stories: Art Gunther's repeat title, tying John Trautmann with three career wins; Nanuet's women turning the tables on Clarkstown South; the Albertus men falling out of the top 3 for the first time in race history (not counting the inaugural 1983 shindig). But the most impressive performance again comes courtesy of the Suffern men, placing five scorers in the top 14 for a 43-point total; the team's top three all run under 15:50. The Mounties set a race record for victory margin as they beat Monroe Woodbury 43-117, a whopping 74-point difference. That record alone places the Mounties in very elite company; I rate Suffern's '97 squad as the sixth-best Alumni team in race history.

1996

Though not quite a devastating as in 1995 or 1997, Suffern easily won the men's title for the second straight year, beating Albertus 67-112. The de facto retirement of John Trautmann cleared the way for the first of Art Gunther's run of three consecutive individual titles. The South women won their second straight as well, nipping Nanuet 72-84.

For the men in purple and gold, 1996 marked an important building step. With the graduation of Mike Morris, we now had a trio of consistent scorers, as well as a future #1 runner. Our move up to the fourth spot in the standings was considered cause for great optimism.

1995

Though none of us knew it at the time, 1994 had marked the end of the most powerful dynasty in Alumni Run history. Between 1985 and 1994, the Albertus Magnus men had won 8 of 10 race titles, finished second once, and finished third once. Having raced against them during the last two of their wins in my first two Alumni races, their dominance was all I knew. But 1995 would mark the beginning of a new dynasty. The Suffern men would reign over the Alumni field for the next three years in such dominating fashion that Albertus became something of an afterthought.

It is worth noting, though, that were it not for the Mounties' sudden arrival, Albertus would probably have won another two or three championships. The basic core of Kempton, Buckheit, Crowley, Chambers, and Beckerle really hadn't lost a step. But during the three-year span from 1995-1997, Suffern was as close to unbeatable as a team could be.

The women's race would see another dynasty of sorts emerge as well, as Clarkstown South won the first of two straight titles and the second of five straight top two appearances. Pearl River, the first women's champion and owner of four women's titles, also saw their reign come to an end in 1994.

From an individual standpoint, the racing has never been better. The men's top three of John Trautmann, Art Gunther, and Jamie Kempton is possibly the most decorated trio in race history. Trautmann's 14:36, coming one year after his course record run, equalled George Buckheit's 1985 winning time as the second-fastest in race history. Thirteen runners broke the 16-minute barrier. Defending women's champion Linda Scheu took seven seconds off her winning time from 1994 and lost by over a minute, as former Ramapo/Villanova star and Olympic Trials finalist Debbie Grant Marshall demolished the course record by 38 seconds with her 17:03. Three other women broke 19:00.

1994

Every year, the results book dedicates this page to Tom Campbell and his computer. Since I've been spending the last ten years wondering what happened here, Jamie Kempton was kind enough to help me out with the following story:

"Tom Campbell (AM '71) is a computer guru who came up with the idea that if we computerized the results it would be a vast improvement on the manual method of scoring that we had always used. He managed to convince the majordomos (Tom Doherty, Ralph Coleman) that this system would work for the Alumni Run, but it would mean that every name must be pre-entered into the computer and everyone affix a bar code to their card.

"It turned out to be a total disaster. The race started 15 minutes late because Tom needed more time to enter names into the computer. He had some kind of computer glitch that shut down the system, and he couldn't access the results. The worst part was, he seemed so confident of this system that we did not have any backup system in place. Big mistake. As a result, there were no official results. If I'm not mistaken, there was a digital clock at the finish, so finishers could get their time if they caught a glimpse of the clock as they were finishing."

As it turns out, Jamie not only solved the mystery of the computer, but also was able to provide me with a complete top ten, which I share with you below. (Frank Visingardi provided some additional results for the members of the 1994 Athletics Anonymous team, courtesy of John Nepolitan.) However, I do owe Tom's computer a debt of gratitude. In eating the 1994 results, Tom's computer eliminated all proof of my poorest Alumni Run showing ever. (This was during my lazy, pizza-eating sophomore year of college, which should not be confused with any of my other three pizza-eating years of college.) I will admit that it was ugly and that, for the only time in my Alumni career, I would wind up finishing (1) outside the top 30, and (2) behind a girl.

It did make it easier that the aforementioned "girl" was none other than Linda Scheu, my former Clarkstown North (and future Cornell) teammate, who became the only Rams alumnus, male or female, ever to win an Alumni Run. So I will dedicate this page not only to Tom Campbell (and will raise my glass in a toast to his computer), but also to Linda, and to John Trautmann, whose astounding 14:08 remains a course record to this day--a record that may never be broken.

1993

This is a special year for me. I graduated from North in June and ran my first Alumni Run on Thanksgiving Saturday (there I am at the bottom, in 27th place). After our 1992 cross-country campaign, my fellow classmates and I figured to lead the Rams back to Alumni glory. It didn't quite work out that way (at least not for a few years), but it was fun to get back to the old stomping grounds, even though I was on a two-year hiatus from competitive running and wouldn't rejoin my college team until my junior year.

Paul Sklar became the first male runner to win consecutive titles, beating out the ageless Jamie Kempton. Albertus won yet again for the men, and I experienced firsthand just how dominant their dynasty was. Their 67-point margin of victory over Clarkstown South was, at the time, the largest in race history. The combined scoring bothers me to no end, but this year the standings are not affected (though Nanuet's men pick up nearly 100 points in the adjusted scoring). Pearl River again forms the only complete women's team, thereby taking their fourth title. R.C Ketcham's Marisa Sutera runs an astounding 17:41 to break Rita Keahon's four-year-old course record by 16 seconds. She places 33rd overall and gives me quite a scare.

1992

You want numbers? We got numbers. The Alumni Run saw a record turnout, more than doubling the previous record of 156 (1990) by attracting 334 runners, a mark which still stands today. While the race has yet to achieve such a lofty standard since then, the total number of runners consistently remains above 200 per year. I cannot account for the sudden spike in interest, except to hazard a guess--free beer.

Pearl River upsets the Albertus men for their second title while also reclaiming the women's title. The 13-point margin of victory for the Pirates represents the second-closest race in history. Again, I am flummoxed by the combined scoring. This year is particularly vexing due to the record numbers; Pearl River is the only women's team with five runners in the top 20, and therefore the only team I can confirm as a full women's team. While I thought that this might rob Nanuet of a victory (the Golden Knights nabbed four of the first six spots in the women's race) a closer look at the overall results reveals that no Nanuet runner, male or female, finished after the 20th female runner. Sorry, ladies. In fact, the only names I recognize in the last part of the results as being definitely female all belong to Pearl River runners and therefore would not affect the scoring. The Nanuet team that is complete, however--the men--drop from 7th to 9th as a result of eliminating the rather substantial help they received from their women.

1991

The promise of the Class of '89 was realized in 1991, as Art Gunther won his first Alumni title in 15:05, outdistancing two-time champ George Buckheit and fellow 1989 alum Andy Yim. The Albertus men pulled off the "repeat three-peat," winning their sixth title in seven years with what I consider their second-best team ever--four runners in the top 7 and 37 points overall. Debbie Grant Marshall upset Rita Keahon for the first of her two women's titles, but other than that, I can't tell you much.

One rather silly facet added to the results this year was the scoring of multiple teams from the same school. This makes no sense to me, and, fortunately, the practice has been eliminated. While the results book continues to record these results (and while it may be interesting that Albertus' "B" team beat the "A" team from five other schools), I have eliminated the superfluous teams here.

One last thing to note here: the Suffern men made their first appearance in the top three this year, thanks in large part to 1991 grad Tim Cox. A little portent of things to come, I guess; while it did take them a couple of years to get going, the Mounties of the mid-Nineties were a scary, scary team.
