1986

For some reason, the year 1986 has always seemed so pivotal in my life. Why is that? The only important historical events I can recall from that year are the Challenger explosion and the Mets winning the World Series. Yet my life seems to turn on that one focal point. I find that odd. Maybe it's the World Series thing. ("Trickling, trickling...Gets by Buckner! Knight is rounding third...")

Of course, if you are a Clarkstown North track aficionado, you know that 1986 was the graduation year of Mike Rogan, probably the best runner in North history. Rogan made his Alumni Run debut that fall, running 15:23 to place seventh overall. He ran impressively on the Alumni scene for several more years, placing second in 1988 and fourth in 1989 before vanishing for a time in the 1990s; during my high school career Rogan was the oft-cited but rarely seen legend that all high school programs probably have canonized in their past. It wasn't until a few years ago that Mike started to return to The Bear regularly. I met him for the first time (actually the second, but that's a story for another time) about a month before the 2003 race. What a great guy! And now he seems to have committed to the race again. Now I'm looking forward to seeing him on a yearly basis.

For the Alumni Run itself, 1986 was also an important year. Two new individual champions emerged. Goshen's Brian Nierstedt, the 1984 champ, returned to the race but was supplanted by North Rockland legend Todd Sinclair, who took the title in his first Alumni race. Ditto for the Red Raiders' Nancy Sayre, who won the race in her first year of eligibility. Though not quite as dominant as the year before, the Albertus men easily outpaced Pearl River, 47-113, for their second straight title.
