2018

More of the same this year: Monroe Woodbury again swept the men's, women's, and team participation titles, in fairly dominant fashion on all counts.  In fact the Crusaders this year accounted for nearly one-third of the 164 finishers.  Overall finish numbers continue to lag from the race's heyday.  Certainly on the Rockland side, we're seeing fewer recent graduates making the pilgrimage to the Bear an annual event, and there is precious little new blood coming in every year.  This is likely due to the fact that Nike Regionals now take place on the same day as the Alumni run, stealing many recent alums who are now coaches, and eroding awareness of the race among current high school athletes.  Perhaps some education and outreach is needed.

Automated timing and scoring this year was graciously provided by MW's Matt Hemmer who did a fantastic job compiling the results.  (It did screw up the formatting a little bit, sorry for difficulty reading the results on the "Full Results" link below.)  As Matt's system scores the race according to standard team XC rules, only the top seven runners for each team are included in the team scores, and only full teams are counted.  While this is standard for a large XC invitational, it isn't how the last 35 years of Alumni scoring have gone, where all runners count toward the team scores and displacing other runners.  For the most part, I've left this year's team results as is.  Adjusting the scores for our traditional method had very little effect on the overall standings (Pearl River would've jumped Goshen for second; Clarkstown South leaps Suffern for fifth), though it would've made the winning scores on the men's and women's sides slightly less impressive.  I've adjusted the women's score below, as there have been a number of years when there was only one women's team; while I left the men's scores untouched, my instinct is not to count the men's 34-point total among the top records, as their "raw" score would've been substantially higher.  We'll see how this team question will be addressed moving forward.
