2011

Near-perfect weather helped a very strong turnout for the 2011 Alumni Run, and the quality performances were out in force. To me, the the 29th running was a continuation/confirmation of a number of trends that we've seen over the past several years:
  1. The new course is slow--at least 30-45 seconds slow.
  2. The men's individual racing is HOT, and new blood seems to come to the fore every year, which bodes well for the future.
  3. The men's team race is completely up for grabs.
  4. The Monroe Woodbury women are an unstoppable force of nature.
The Lady Crusaders took their fifth title in the past seven years, and their record eighth overall, in typically dominant fashion, placing four in the top 6 for a 28-point total (second-best all-time) and a 60-point margin of victory (also second-best all-time). What more can you say? At this point, the women in purple are as good as the mid-'80s Albertus teams were, and they don't seem to be slowing down any.

The mens' team race was the exact opposite. No mens' team placed more than two runners in the top 10, and for the third straight year, the winning score broke 80--the three highest winning scores in race history. We are clearly in an era without a dominant team, though the fact that Suffern's winning effort was led by five collegians (top scorer Evan Flach '08 is the oldest member of the team) could portend the beginnings of a juggernaut. The slow death of the Rams' former dynasty continues (emphasis on slow), but we were somehow able to hang on to third for our record 14th consecutive top-3 finish. Pretty soon we'll be shooting for the age group title.

The most important record set on the day? Monroe Woodbury overtook Pearl River for most all-time Alumni Run participants, 633-621. Congrats to the Crusaders! Albertus also passed Suffern for fourth on the all-time list, and Spring Valley crept up into a tie with Nyack for tenth.
